SEASIDERS HEADING FOR HALF-TERM
This coming Saturday, Penarth RFC will reach the nine-game half-way point of their first season in Division One East Central with the visit of Rhiwbina RFC to the Athletic Field. It hasn’t been a bad start in the first eight games, with only two narrow defeats away from home, against old friends Llanharan and leaders St.Joseph’s.
Even without a 100% record, the statistics make encouraging reading and the Seasiders are hanging in there, only two points adrift of top position. This is largely due to having scored more points (304, average 38 per game) and tries (48, average 6 per game!) than any other team in the division.
The gap between the top four and the rest of the table remains large and Penarth are fully ten points above fifth-placed Llanharan. In any season where there was more than one place available for rising into the Championship, this would be promotion form.
The Seasiders remain optimistic and the run-in to the Christmas break has an appetising look to it. Abercwmboi (A) and Barry (H) follow on after Saturday’s game.
Rhiwbina RFC are not having a happy time of it either. Having avoided relegation last season, they have struggled to one win in eight games and are six points adrift in the relegation zone. Their sole victory was against winless bottom club Porth Harlequins. If a Penarth win is by no means guaranteed, it’s certainly required if they are to maintain the pressure on leaders St.Joseph’s, who play away at Llanishen.
