SEASIDERS AIMING FOR THE TOP AT CHRISTMAS
Well, last week Storm Darragh certainly put paid to any plans to go top of Division 1 East Central, but those of us who remember earlier games at an exposed Parc Aberaman would tell you that was no bad thing.
Still, there’s nothing wrong with ambition and, guess what? Next Saturday is Round 3 of the Division 1 Cup and there are only two league fixtures. Bottom club Porth Harlequins welcome Llanharan to Nythbran Terrace, while Penarth are looking forward to a local derby against neighbours Barry RFC.
Recent history in the fixture has been kind to the Seasiders, as the season opener at the beginning of September was a rather one-sided affair. Although Barry took an early 3-0 lead, the rest of the game belonged to the visitors. Tries from Miles Jones (2), Rhys Beynon, Spencer Robinson, Josh Hurley, Luc Keane-Adams and George Roberts sealed a 45-3 win and established a pattern of scoring that the side have maintained.
While Penarth are clearly in their element at the higher lever, two points behind leaders St.Josephs with 38 points from 9 games, Barry have continued to struggle and sit just above the relegation zone with 11 points from 9.
While we can be confident that the Bombers will turn up with full intent to defy form having only beaten the two clubs below them in the table, the Seasiders have a tastier target: by-passing St.Josephs and going into Christmas top of the table.
With no league fixtures now until the new year, Penarth will be waiting for old friends Llanharan at the Athletic Field on Saturday 4th January 2025.
