TEN TRY SEASIDER’S MAUL TIGERS
Tylorstown 28-56 Penarth (HT 7-27)
In what may well turn out to be the final match of the season for Penarth RFC’s 1st XV they put in a performance that surpassed the drubbing of Penygraig two weeks previous. Ten tries by 9 different scorers cemented a significant win and the margin of victory was only reduced by some late consolation scores from the home side and an off day from the kicking tee.
Initially the task looked like it may be a lot stiffer as the Tylorstown centre sliced through the middle of the Penarth defence to give the home side an early 7-0 lead. However, that was as good as it got for the Tigers as Penarth dusted themselves down and proceeded to provide a fine display of running and off-loading to move up to 4th place in the league.
First over the line was James Candy with a neat finish in the right hand corner. This was soon followed up with a second from Spencer Robinson who pounced on a loose ball and outsprinted the defence over 60 meters to put Penarth into a lead that they would never relinquish.
Penarth’s dominance was by now apparent across all areas of the pitch with the forward pack in particular giving their opposite numbers a torrid time. Cameron Sultana, fresh from international duty with Malta, was to the fore along with Lloyd Clarke who was a noticeable presence around the park on his return from University. It was not a surprise that it was the forwards who provided the next two scores firstly Mason Good dropped over the line after a dominant rolling maul before captain on the day Miles Jones showed some nifty footwork to evade 2 tackles to register an early bonus point.
The final try of the half came from Josh Hurley who had clearly chosen his dancing shoes over his kicking boots for the afternoon and some slick sidestepping saw him over the line and he followed up with his first conversion of the day to make the half time score 7-27.
The second half was much more of the same. Rhys Beynon opened the scoring to cap a fine performance and he was swiftly replaced by Rhys Morgan. Matt Allen fresh from the bench added Penarth’s 7th try following which the bench was emptied and the final 25 minutes saw a basketball style display with the sides clearly enjoying the sunshine and exchanging 3 tries a piece in the final quarter. Hurley, Geraint Williams and Andy Richards crossed the whitewash for Penarth with Hurley also adding a couple of conversions to round off what was confident display.
If this does turn out to be the final game of the season it is one that will leave the Penarth faithful hopeful of an even more successful year when rugby proper returns in September. The depth of the squad is clearly improving and the spine of the team is looking increasingly strong as Good, Jones, Robinson, Beynon and Hurley in particular really seem to have stepped up from exciting prospects to real leaders on the pitch. Morgan Williams at fly half looks a real find and with the hope of a few boys progressing from the successful youth team the future looks bright.
