Seasiders Hold On for a Win
Penarth 20 Pentyrch 14 – Saturday 14 September 2013
In a vital reversal of last Saturday’s close defeat, the Seasiders held out for a win against a lively Pentyrch side which had clearly come for a win. A much-changed home side gained an early upper hand in the scrum, but struggled to get the line-out working for much of the eighty minutes.
There’s no doubting the team spirit in this Penarth side and after a messy first ten minutes as the sides adjusted to the wind, the hosts worked the ball up to the visitors’ 22 and laid siege. Then Nathan Smith skilfully ghosted through the cover and passed to Joe Page 10m out, the hooker, playing on the blindside flank, made sure of the try, fighting his way past the attentions of several defenders.
Now Pentyrch came back into the game decisively as both centres made huge breaks and eventually it was Tom Marley who ran clear along the left wing before giving the scoring pass to Will Adams-Jones.
The Seasiders got back on top soon enough, earning a kickable penalty, but Mike Hurley was having a rare off day with the boot and the score remained on 5-7. There followed a lengthy period of Penarth dominance, but no further score despite a lot of good work by Scott Mackie and Geraint Blake. This was brought to an end when Nathan Smith made his one mistake in an otherwise assured performance at outside-half when a worked move in midfield fell apart and he delivered the ball instead to Pentyrch centre Nick Gill who sprinted 70m to score under the posts.
There followed a lengthy delay as Pentrych outside-half Morgan Hayward received treatment and was eventually stretchered off. On resumption the game reverted to an error-strewn muddle, but some of the fight seemed to have gone out of the visitors and the Seasiders were able to claw the initiative back. Nathan Smith was again the inspiration, almost putting Joe Page in for his second try, but Richard Merrett was on hand to pick up and drive over.
Turning around 10-14 behind, the extent to which the wind had been helping the visitors became obvious as Smith began to work the far touchline. Paul Baddis had replaced Gareth Clancy at scrum half and immediately set out to get his back line moving. Ten minutes of real pressure from Penarth looked sure to yield a score, but Pentyrch kept them out at the cost of a string of penalties. The Seasiders elected to scrummage throughout and eventually the obvious threat of a penalty try kept the visitors honest and Scott Mackie went over for the third try, putting his side into a 17-14 lead at last.
With 30 minutes remaining and the wind at their backs, a bonus point seemed there for the taking, but somehow Penarth couldn’t turn their dominance at the scrum into points. A penalty from Nathan Smith was all they had to show for all the possession and the last ten minutes, leading by just the one score led to some nervous moments when Pentyrch briefly got over the half-way line for the first time in the second period.
This really should have been a more convincing victory, but a win’s a win and they travel to mid-Wales next Saturday to face Gwernyfed, fresh from a 21-19 win against neighbours Brecon.
