Penarth and Barbarians 1901-1986
27th April – 17 May 2015
The exhibition “Penarth and the Barbarians” was officially opened on Friday, 1st of May in the presence of Micky Steele-Bodger the President of the club and Geoffrey Windsor-Lewis the Vice-President and a former Wales international and Barbarian as well as Penarth RFC officials, former players and their families. “This is a wonderful occasion and I have to say that I congratulate Penarth RFC for this impressive display, which brings back fantastic memories. I have been in Penarth, with one exception when I had to play for England, on every Good Friday since 1946, and what a great time was had by all,” Mr Steele-Bodger said.
The Exhibition at the Pier Pavilion, not far from the place the old Esplanade Hotel used to stand, the home of the Barbarians during their Easter tour to Wales, is a contribution to the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the Barbarian FC. Penarth RFC, the host of the Good Friday match, the opening act of a tour that included Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, has been the driving force behind the project, which illustrates both the club’s rich 135-year history, as well as its remarkable association with the Barbarian FC, which commenced in 1901 and lasted for 85 years, until 1986.
The Club’s Chairman Mike Clare, has welcomed the guests and thanked the Barbarian officials for turning up. “For Penarth Town and the rugby club the Good Friday will always be synonymous with Barbarian rugby. This is why we made this effort to put the exhibition together, to contribute to the 125th anniversary of the Club without a fixed abode. “I also would like to thank the club members and their families who sponsored the Exhibition panels and display cabinets, in a joint community effort that we appreciate and are grateful for. We also need to mention the huge contribution of the exhibition’s main sponsor, Beacon Printers, a local design consultancy and printing company to the design and printing of the 33 panels of the Exhibition,” he added.
Dr David Trotman, the Director of the Pier has welcomed the assembled guests explaining the Exhibition contributed to the growing status of the Pier as a cultural centre for the Town and the neighbouring villages. “It is a great days for all concerned, and we congratulate Penarth RFC, Beacon Printers and CHT Communications for the success of the exhibition,” he said. The narrative of the exhibition, which consists of 33 panels and five display cabinets, is largely based on the book “The Spirit of Penarth” by Exhibition curator Chris Thau.
The official opening of the Exhibition was followed by the 125th Anniversary Dinner, held at the Penarth RFC clubhouse, which was a genuine triumph for organisers, which included former club Secretary Sara Siddall, Vice-Chairman Mike Gooding, local artist and designer Andrew Cosslett ,club manager Natasha Swaine, Andrew Jones, the Chairman of Penarth Athletic Club and the MC and former player Stuart Gunnarsson. “What a splendid night” Mr Steele-Bodger said.
